Has Beard, Plays Games is proud to announce that our charity gaming marathon is back! We learned a lot of lessons when we did the first marathon, so this year we have a much bigger – and hopefully much better! – event planned than before. There will be a much wider range of games this time around, and this time we plan a number of competitions to give away a number of games!
As gruelling as the last marathon was, this year we plan to make it even more of a challenge. Instead of two separate 24 hour sessions, this marathon will be one single 36 hour session. That’s 36 continuous hours of non-stop gaming all in an effort to raise money for charity.
Cancer Research UK
All money raised this year will be donated to Cancer Research UK. Yes, they are a very large charity, and many will argue that efforts should be made to support the smaller charities out there, the ones that don’t get all the headlines. Of course the smaller charities shouldn’t be forgotten, I’m not going to disagree with that. But “cancer” isn’t just one specific type of disease; what we call “cancer” could refer to any number of diseases, all affecting different parts of the body with different symptoms, life expectancy, survival rates, etc. There is a very high probability that, throughout your lifetime, you will know someone who will be affected by one form of cancer or another. We probably all have personal stories about how cancer has affected our friends and family – I certainly have – and the chances are that these stories involve different types of cancer.
Cancer Research UK is working to fight over 200 different types of cancer. I can’t think of anything else that I want to support more wholeheartedly.

This year our participants will be playing through the fantastic XCOM: Enemy Within on “Ironman” mode. Ironman means no going back: you get one save file and the game saves automatically for you. If your favourite soldier dies then they stay dead – no going back to an earlier save game to try and save them!
In addition to XCOM: Enemy Within we also have some smaller indie games lined up to break things up a bit. The last marathon was all Minecraft, and let me tell you: you don’t know tired until you’ve been up for more than 20 hours and you’ve been digging for diamonds for hours on end!
Yes! We plan to run a number of competitions/giveaways during the live stream. A separate page has been created here with all the full details.
Wherever you please! This event will be streamed via Twitch, so you can tune in anywhere with an internet connection on any device which can access Twitch.
The event is planned to start on Friday 27th June 2014 at 2200 BST (GMT+1). You can check out http://www.worldtimebuddy.com/ to find out what this means in your local timezone.
Sounds good. Tell me more.
This page will be kept up to date with all the latest information, but you can always hit us up on Facebook or Twitter. If you want to volunteer to help out then feel free to contact us via either of those pages.
